![]() Dancing in Colombia depicts a lively café scene. Though his satirical renderings may seem humorous at first, they are often laden with social and political commentary. Botero's art often depicts scenes of leisure in which people are shown drinking or dancing. In the 1970s, Botero translated his oversized images to sculpture, producing enormous bronze figures and animals that literally measured eight to fifteen feet in height and length. Spanish explorers arrived in Colombia in 1500 but didn't establish a settlement until 1525. From the Chibcha arose the Muisca, an advanced culture that became the dominant power in Colombia by A.D. Some 8,000 years after that, settlers in the Magdalena Valley in the western part of the country grew into a civilization called the Chibcha. Archaeologists think the first people to arrive in Colombia came about 20,000 years ago.
